Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) creates pictures of the inside of your body using radio waves, magnets, and a computer. This non-invasive procedure requires no surgery or radiation, and nothing is inserted into your body. A contrasting dye is sometimes used to improve the detail of the images.
During an MRI, you will need to lay very still on a table while it passes through the MRI machine. You may be instructed to hold your breath for brief periods to avoid blurring of the images. The length of the procedure varies depending on the number of pictures needed, but they generally last between 30 minutes and one hour.
