What do I get?

One diagnostic breast ultrasound at Belladonna Breast Imaging Center. Belladonna is the only independent, all female staff center solely dedicated to breast imaging and diagnosis in the Puget Sound.

What is ultrasound imaging of the breast?

Ultrasound imaging, or sonography, involves using high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. If any abnormalities show up on your mammography, then we may need to take a breast ultrasound. This is another imaging method that is used to evaluate some abnormalities seen on mammograms. Ultrasound imaging can help in determining if an abnormality is solid or fluid-filled, such as a cyst. The results of the ultrasound will be discussed with you by the radiologist at the end of the exam.

Exclusions/Prerequisites/Notes:

  • Diagnostic breast ultrasounds require a physician’s referral. Women who have unusual breast pain or a lump will require a physician’s referral for a diagnostic evaluation.

  • Please avoid wearing powders, deodorant, lotions or sprays

  • Wear a two-piece outfit: you will be asked to disrobe from the waist up

  • If prior mammograms or breast ultrasounds were done at another facility, please let us know before your appointment - we are happy to arrange their transfer to Belladonna for you.

What do I get?

One digital screening mammogram at Belladonna Breast Imaging Center. Belladonna is the only independent, all female staff center solely dedicated to breast imaging and diagnosis in the Puget Sound.

About mammography:

Mammography is the preferred screening method for breast cancer. A dedicated machine, designed specifically for breast imaging, directs a low energy x-ray beam through the breast to produce very high definition images. BBIC digital mammography uses the latest technology that exposes patients to 20-30% less radiation than older digital units used by other facilities.

Mammography's primary benefit is in its ability to show with clarity the very small, delicate structures of breast tissue. In fact, mammography can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. For this reason, the American Medical Association and the American College of Radiology recommend women have annual mammograms beginning at age 40.

Exclusions/Prerequisites/Notes:

  • Screening mammograms do not require a physician’s referral. Screening mammograms are done as a preventive measure. Women who have unusual breast pain or a lump will require a physician’s referral for a diagnostic evaluation.

  • Please avoid wearing powders, deodorant, lotions or sprays

  • Wear a two-piece outfit: you will be asked to disrobe from the waist up

  • If possible, schedule your mammograms after your period to reduce breast tenderness

  • If prior mammograms were done at another facility, please let us know at the time we are scheduling your appointment and we are happy to arrange their transfer to Belladonna for you.
